The Pakistan Navy was established in 1947 by Indian Muslim officers serving in the Royal Indian Navy. The title "Royal" was soon added but was dropped when Pakistan became an Islamic Republic in 1956. Its operational scope extends to a wider national scale with approximately 71 warships and 36,000 active duty personnel and an international responsibility to combat the threat of sea-based global terrorism, drug trafficking and smuggling issues. The Pakistan Navy is responsible for protecting the country's ports, maritime borders, nearly 1,000 km (650 mi) of coastline and supporting national security and peacekeeping missions.
The Naval
Headquarters (NHQ) is the only command structure located in Rawalpindi Cantt.,
near the Joint Staff Headquarters. The Navy is commanded by the Chief of Naval
Staff (CNS), a statutory four-star officer, selected by the President, with the
necessary consultation and approval of the Prime Minister.
Until
October 2014, Admiral Muhammad Zakaullah was the Chief of the Pakistan Navy.
The Navy
operates indigenously developed Agosta 90B submarines.
Navy Day is
celebrated on September 8 to commemorate its services in the Indo-Pak war of
1965.

Personnel
Commissioned
Officers
In the early
1950s, the Pakistan Navy, established in August 1947, adopted the officer rank
system of the United States Navy, moving away from following the ranks and
insignia of the Royal Navy.
As compared
to army or air force where one can take different paths to become an officer,
there is only one way to become an officer in Navy, that is to go to Pakistan
Naval Academy after one and a half years. Going through a boot camp at Manorah
Island.
Graduating
cadets join the Navy as midshipmen, where they gain experience of life at sea
while undergoing training for various careers onboard. Midshipmen After
graduation, midshipmen typically undergo six months of post-graduation training
before returning to the Naval Academy to be promoted to the rank of
sub-lieutenant. During his time in college, he was offered free tuition to
pursue a bachelor's degree in his chosen field at the Naval Engineering
College, Karachi.
There are
three categories of enlisted officers in the Navy: junior officers, senior
officers, and star officers. Junior officers are graded as OF-1 to OF-3, while
senior officers are graded as OF-4 to OF-5, and star officers are graded as
OF-6 to OF-9.
The Navy
also employs civilians in fields such as financial management, accounting,
medical services, computing and administration, with more than 2,000 civilians
meeting its quota for 2018.
The Maritime
Security Agency (MSA) and the Pakistan Army Coast Guard's naval branch comprise
the permanent naval strength of the Pakistan Navy as per the entries and
estimates of the International Institute for Strategic Studies.

Enlisted
personnel
Recruitment
and enlistment in the Navy is conducted nationwide, and for the Navy,
recruitment is through televised advertisements and job tenders published twice
a year: in May for boot camp and in November. For registration.
Recruitment
offices and centers are located all over Pakistan, including Punjab, Khyber
Pakhtunkhwa, Sindh and Balochistan - these offices are managed by the
Directorate of Recruitment at Navy NHQ Islamabad. Prior to 1966, almost all
officers and enlisted men of the Pakistan Navy had to attend military academies
in Great Britain for training in technical branches.
Enlisted
personnel are trained on technical subject aspects after completing a
nine-month long boot camp at PNS Karsaz in Karachi. They are then assigned to
different branches of the Navy after completing their training.
Navy
enlisted personnel who achieve financial success in their profession receive
financial assistance from the Navy Department to study in colleges and
universities, thus advancing officers in the Navy much faster than in the
Pakistan Army or Pakistan Air Force. It is from When enlisted personnel retire,
they rarely stay in their enlisted ranks, as most retire as officers after
reaching age 62.
These
experiences form the basis of their professional training at universities that
will allow them to earn a four-year college degree.
A
non-commissioned officer's (or enlisted personnel's) shoulder is decorated with
their respective anchor colors and patches or badges. The retirement age of
enlisted personnel varies and is determined by their rank.

Recruitment
and training
The British
Royal Navy provided training and education to cadets at all levels of their
studies and training at the Britannia Royal Naval College in the United Kingdom
after the establishment of the Navy in August 1947.
When the
Navy Department was established in 1947, it numbered 3,800. Like the Navy
Department, the Navy had similar problems with its Department of the Army in
that the most talented recruits were Punjabi Muslims while others were Indian
nationals with Pakistani citizenship.
During the
Bhutto administration, there was a quota system to provide a fair chance to the
residents of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan to join the armed forces. A
Balochi woman joined the Navy for the first time in 2012, joining a squad that
included 53 female officers and 72 enlisted men from Balochistan, Pakistan.
In 2012,
Baloch University students were sent in large numbers to Naval Engineering
Colleges and War Colleges for their officer training, strengthening the Navy's
presence in Balochistan. Three additional training facilities were established
in Balochistan to enable the Navy to train its personnel.
Navy
recruiters still struggle to recruit civilians and their selfless commitment to
serve in the armed forces of urban metropolitan cities where college education
(especially in the United States and English-speaking Post-graduate education
in countries) is much sought after and more popular.
A
significant challenge is also posed by the Navy's medical standards and
education requirements for performing technical jobs, as the Navy requires a
significant percentage after completion of the matriculation exams.
In the Navy,
basic military training takes place at a boot camp, on PNS Himalaya Manorah
Island. During the nine months of basic military training at PNS Himalaya,
military life instruction is imparted with an emphasis on physical
conditioning.
Finally,
when enlisted men and women complete boot camp, they are sent to the Pakistan
Naval Academy for two years.

Marines
recommended by the Navy, based on the Royal Marines, the Pakistan Marines was
formed on 1 July 1971 to undertake riverine operations in East Pakistan.
The Marines
participated in their first combat operations in the Marines during the
Bangladesh War of Independence, fighting against the Indian Army.
Due to poor
combat performance in the war, high losses and casualties and inability to
fully counter the Indian Army, the Marines were disbanded by 1974.
However, the
Marines in their initial form continued to survive till 1988 to meet the basic
security needs of Pakistan Navy units. The Marines were reintroduced in 1990
under the leadership of Commander M Obaidullah.
Marines is
the uniformed service branch under the Pakistan Navy, which is directed
directly by the Pakistan Navy.
It follows
the rank code of the Navy but conducts combat training with the Army at the
Pakistan Military Academy Kakul and School of Infantry in Quetta.
The sole
command structure of the Marines is based at the Manora Fort located at the
Qasim Marine Base in Karachi.
The Marines
are under the command of the Commander Coast (COMCOAST), a two-star rear
admiral in command.
According to
the ISPR, the Marines are deployed in the south-eastern areas of Pakistan to
avoid infiltration and covert activities by the Indian Army.
